Join us for a night of poetry, sounds, and Miami soul celebrating artist Gary Simmons's sculptural installation, Recapturing Memories of the Black Ark. The installation consists of a stage and speakers that, when activated, serve as a venue for live performances. The speakers are encased with wood salvaged from the streets of New Orleans's Tremé neighborhood in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. The objects bear the spray-painted traces of that history, just as they hold the memory of past performance activations.
This evening kicks off a series of activations with a "Celebration of Sound and Soul" curated by Ingrid B and Arsimmer McCoy in honor of the life of Andre "Soul" Williams. The celebration will feature poets Molo, Salam The Poet, Arsimmer McCoy, and Conscious Sheesh, hosted by Ingrid B, and with music by DJ Pressure Point.
